Winter solstice in Egypt is Friday, December 21, 2012 at 1:11:00 PM.
The dark winter days will reveal solstice morning at Karnak temple.  The Temple of Karnak in Luxor, Egypt is aligned to the winter solstice sunrise. When the sun rises on solstice morning, it will illuminate the left and right walls on either side of the entrance. As the rays rise, they will light the sanctuary of Amoun-Re and brighten the obelisk of Hatshepsut.
Though many of the temples in upper Egypt are aligned astronomically, none are more significant as the Temple of Karnak. Karnak is known as the most holy of holy places. Is the center of the world dedicated to Amun, where he first brought forth creation. Construction is said to have begun during the Middle Kingdom, dated between 2055 BC and 1650 BC. Amun was known as the champion of the poor or troubled and central to personal piety.
